The signal in your stride
How fast you walk is one of the most reliable indicators of how well you are aging. Here is what decades of research found, and why a device in your pocket can now read it.
Walking feels automatic. You stand up, you go, and you rarely give it a second thought. That ordinariness is exactly what hides how much is happening underneath. A single stride pulls together your heart, your lungs, your circulation, your nervous system, and your muscles and bones, all coordinated in real time. When any one of those systems is under strain, your walk tends to register it before you consciously notice.
That is why researchers have spent years studying something that sounds almost too simple to matter: how fast people walk. The results are hard to ignore.
A walk that predicts how long you will live
In 2011, a team led by Dr. Stephanie Studenski published a landmark analysis in the Journal of the American Medical Association. They pooled nine long-running studies covering 34,485 adults aged 65 and older and followed their survival over many years. The question was direct. Does walking speed tell you anything about longevity that age and sex do not?
It does, and by a lot. Every increase of 0.1 meters per second in usual walking speed was associated with roughly a 12 percent lower risk of dying over the follow-up period. Stack those increments across the full range of walking speeds and the gap becomes striking.
The researchers found a useful anchor point. A walking speed of about 0.8 meters per second lined up with average life expectancy for a person’s age and sex. Faster than that predicted longer than average survival. Speeds above 1.0 meters per second consistently pointed to better than expected outcomes, and above 1.2 meters per second the authors described life expectancy as exceptional. On the other end, speeds slower than 0.6 meters per second flagged meaningfully higher risk.
Perhaps the most surprising finding was how much walking speed held its own. Predictions built from age, sex, and gait speed were about as accurate as predictions that layered in chronic conditions, blood pressure, body mass index, smoking history, and recent hospitalizations. One measured walk carried nearly as much signal as a stack of clinical data.
Why a walk carries so much information
Walking is deceptively demanding. It requires energy production, balance, timing, and fine motor control, all drawn from systems that quietly age at different rates. Because it depends on so many of them at once, walking speed behaves like a summary indicator of overall vitality. It integrates problems you already know about and ones that have not surfaced yet.
Clinicians noticed this pattern long ago. Walking speed is now sometimes called the sixth vital sign, sitting alongside heart rate, blood pressure, temperature, respiratory rate, and pain as a quick read on how a person is really doing.
The difference between your age and your aging
Two people can share a birth year and be aging at very different rates. The calendar tells you chronological age. What matters more for health is biological age, the condition of your body relative to the years it has counted. This is where gait becomes genuinely interesting.
Recent work has shown that features extracted from the way a person walks can estimate biological age with real precision. In one 2025 study, gait measures alone predicted age with a mean error of under two years, and combining gait with other markers tightened it further. Longevity-focused clinics, including Northwestern’s Human Longevity Clinic, have begun treating a walk across the room as a measurable biomarker of biological age rather than a casual observation.
The practical value is not a single verdict. It is the trend. A walking signature that drifts over months can surface a change worth paying attention to, ideally early, while there is still room to act.
From the clinic to your pocket
For most of this history, measuring gait meant a marked course, a stopwatch, and trained staff. That kept a powerful signal locked inside research settings and specialty clinics.
Modern phones changed the equation. The same motion sensors that count your steps can capture the finer texture of how you move, the rhythm, symmetry, and steadiness of your gait, not just the total. Machine learning models trained on this kind of sensor data can already estimate age from movement alone, and more importantly, they can track how a person’s movement signature shifts over time.
